ASI engineering simulations were used to review and optimize the design of two blocks of flats, 305 and 341 Caledonia Road, Glasgow, Scotland. The two structures present a RC structural frame with 35m x 17m footprint and 25 floors for a total height of 71m.

ASI built a 3D high fidelity numerical model of the two buildings, including all the relevant structural details, reinforcement and the demolition scenario as per documentation provided by our client Safedem. ASI implemented in the model all the nonstructural components that could have significant impact on the collapse behavior and expected estimation of debris pile, such as blockworks and concrete panels in the façade. ASI analysis was used to estimate

  • Maximum debris spread for exclusion zone.
  • Debris height for optimizing post implosion mechanical demolition process
  • Protection measures for nearby structures and expected vibration levels

Special challenges in this project included close structures and infrastructures as for example the gas pipelines in Caledonia Road or the nursery adjacent to the 341 building.

The demolition was completed successfully in the intended direction according to plan and matching numerical simulation with no damage to nearby structures. The actual vibrations on drop day were compared against the estimated vibration using ASI technology and found to be matching.
