Ramallo Building Implosion

Video of the Implosion Simulation

Contractor: Controlled Demolition and Recycling Co. (CDR)
Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico

Description

  • 9-story concrete structure
  • Unfinished building
  • Deteriorated structural elements
  • As-builds & blueprints unavailable
  • Neighboring occupied structures located along three adjacent sides
  • 12 ft. wide street on fourth side

Modeling

  • ASI engineers completely redesigned the building per codes of the year built
  • Modeled complete 3D structure to include shear walls and reinforced concrete structural elements
  • Accounted for deterioration of reinforcement
  • Modeled non-structural masonry walls that may contribute to behavior of structure during demolition

Demolition Simulation

  • ASI modeled numerous blast scenarios based on CDR’s plans to help determine the structure’s physical behavior
  • Structural elements being blasted were modeled by deleting elements from the model in the location of the blast in the same sequence as the actual blast

Result

  • Results shown here are not the actual demolition scenario that was carried out, but the scenarios that were tested
  • Our scenarios helped plan for the actual demolition
  • Differences between the actual demolition and our simulations are attributed to the difference in blast scenario and some missing structural details
