Charlotte Coliseum Implosion

Charlotte Coliseum Analytic Model

Video of the Coliseum Implosion

Contractor: Dykon Blasting Corp.
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina

Description

  • Charlotte Coliseum (aka The Hive), former home of the Charlotte Hornets, Rage, Sting, Cobras, 49ers, and Bobcats
  • Construction: 1986 - 1988
  • World‘s largest domed arena at time of construction

Modeling

Using original construction plans ASI engineers modeled the structure noting the following elements:

  • Steel and composite columns, girders, and masonry walls
  • Dome truss using exact steel sections
  • Concrete slabs
  • Sloped terrain
  • Cuts, v-cuts, and weakening of structure

Demolition Simulation

  • ASI simulated Dykon’s initial implosion scenario, however the actual implosion plans were modified

Result

  • ASI’s simulation was used in the planning of the actual demolition
  • Demolition simulation provided an unprecedented level of reality
